22 magnum Lever Action Rifle Ithaca Model 49. Introduced at $20 in 1961 and sold until 1979, Ithaca M49 looks like a conventional lever action repeater with 18 inch barrel. This is a great little gun, and has served me well for many squirrel hunts. I have always preferred this rifle over my other 22's, but I would like to get some cash in order to buy something for large game hunting. 22 magnum Lever Action Rifle sn143579: This is a single shot lever action rifle with a martini style action. Barrel is 18 long with adjustable rear sight, fixed front sight. This M49 was a rusty derelict until refinished by Sean Averill of Galt’s Guns A closer look reveals that it’s nothing of the sort, In fact, it’s a single-shot falling block with a dummy magazine tube! If that seems silly, just look at today’s 10-22 carbines disguised through the use of aftermarket stocks as G36 automatic rifles or MG42 machine guns. Loading is quite similar to Martini rifle, but the hammer is external and must be cocked manually. Also unlike the Martini, M49 has very positive extraction.

The sights are typical of entry-level 22s, post and notch, with unmarked drift and elevation adjustments. The finish of the painted aluminum receiver tends to wear poorly.

The original design was riding the coattails of popular Western TV shows. It was meant as a recreational plinker and succeeded admirably in that role. Since 22 Short ammunition was cheaper than 22LR back then and also substantially quieter, many of these rifles have rather gunked-up chambers but substantial chamber erosion is unlikely. With the rifle rested on a sandbag, five-shot groups all looked like the picture below. For a budget carbine with iron sights, that’s pretty impressive! My friend who owns this particular rifle has had it since he was eight years old back in the 1960s, and the gun just keeps on working with minimal care. Since function-testing of this carbine before buying is very simple and spare parts are still available, I would rate it as a diamond in the rough. The demand of new ITHACA GUN M 49 rifle's has not changed over the past 12 months. The used value of an ITHACA GUN M 49 rifle has fallen 0.00 dollars over the past 12 months to a price of 314.15. The 12 month average price is 314.15 used. The M-49s walnut stock provides a handsome contrast against the black finish of the barrel and receiver. AN ITHACA GUN M 49 rifle is currently worth an average price of 314.15 used. 7/16″ at 25 yards works out to 1.75MOA–quite a feat for iron sights and bulk.

These are a fun series of small game hunting or target practice rifles.

This Ithaca M-49 is a lever-action single-shot rifle capable of using 22 Short, 22 Long, or 22LR ammunition. An 18' barrel is adorned with open rifle sights. 22 ammunition ( CCI AR Tactical).Just picked up this little gun at a yard sale for 50 bucks. It was pretty rusted up but very few scratches in the wood.

I've use Kroil oil and fine steel wool and those little green scrubber pads and have gotten most of the rust off. I'm a bit shy of wanting to rub to hard and take the blueing off. The inside and action are very clean and I really like the feel and the balance of this rifle. The Model 49s smooth ashwood stock provides a handsome contrast. An 18-inch barrel is adorned with open rifle sights. Bummed a couple of shells off a neighbor and ran them thru it and it chambers, fires, and ejects beautifully Action is very smooth. This Ithaca Model 49 is a single shot lever-action rifle chambered in 22 Mag. Not having dealt with a 22 mag was wondering if using JHP 40gr ammo would be enough for yotes out to say under a 100yrds? Next keeping that in mind would just a fixed 4 power scope be the way to go? Can't afford a lot and would like to keep the cost of the scope under a 100 bucks.
